چکیده

Hearing conservation in acoustic neuroma surgery via the retrosigmoid approach depends upon a good exposure of the internal auditory canal from behind avoiding labyrinthine injury. The accessibility is influenced largely by the individual characteristics of the temporal bone and the variability of the surgical landmarks is the result of different skull base shapes among different races. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of race on the exposure of the internal auditory canal of Turkish subjects via the retrosigmoid approach. Axial temporal bone CT scans of 40 Turkish individuals were studied by measuring the relevant parameters and the results were statistically analysed and compared with those reported previously for Chinese and Europeans (3). The results showed significant differences in the position of the sigmoid sinus, orientation of the petrous bone and posterior fossa dimensions. This led to the conclusion that a bigger craniotomy is needed in Turkish individuals than in Chinese and Europeans.

An unusual site of a CSF leak following resection of a retrosigmoid acoustic neuroma.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks may occur after acoustic neuroma resection. These leaks are usually the result of an iatrogenic injury during removal. The retrosigmoid approach is commonly associated with leaks that occur through the lateral end of the internal auditory canal, through the perilabyrinthine cells extending to the region of the internal auditory canal, or through the retrosigmoid ...

Respiratory Epithelial Adenomatoid Hamartoma: A Very Rare Entity Originating from the External Auditory Canal

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is an uncommon lesion of the upper aerodigestive tract. It is characterized by abnormal glandular formations with ciliated epithelium arising from the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, but other locations have also been described. We did not find any other cases of this hamartomas in the external auditory canal in the literature...

Development of better imaging techniques has allowed diagnosis of small vestibular schwannoma (VS) and has changed the indications and objectives of surgical treatment of these tumors1,2,3. Complete removal and preservation of cochlear nerve function became a goal to be achieved in patients presenting preoperatively with functional hearing. Usually VS extend within the internal auditory canal (...

Effectiveness of gait-retraining with auditory feedback on pain and lower body kinematics in injured recreational runners

Aims and background: Abnormal hip and knee mechanics are often implicated in runners with history of injury. We considered evaluating a simple gait-retraining protocol, using auditory-external feedback, in runners with running-related injuries and abnormal hip and knee mechanics. The effect of using external-feedback may have been more profound if the content of instruction had been relevant to...
